Why AmeriCorps alumni choose Tanzania
Arusha and the rural communities around it are the base. Placements cover teaching support in primary schools, construction with local builders, medical shadowing, women's programs, and animal welfare, and there are Maasai village stays for anyone who wants time outside the town. English is common in professional settings, though you will pick up Swahili quickly out of necessity. Stays run one to sixteen weeks. Costs per week are moderate, so an award covers most of a long placement and Kilimanjaro or the northern parks are right there when you finish.

- A deposit that ranges from $499-$599 is required to confirm your participation. This is subtracted from the Program Fee total.
- It is important to note that the internship placements grouped as "Medical" require interns to make a Ministry of Health contribution. This supports the operation of placements and covers supervision for interns on medical-related placements. This contribution is not included in the internship program fee; it must be made directly, in-country, under the direction and guidance of the Program Coordinator in Arusha. Interns will not be permitted to commence their placement until this has been covered. The amount of the Ministry of Health contribution varies, as it is not the same for every clinic/hospital. However, to cover the contribution sufficiently, we ask interns to budget up to US$75 per week.

We advise Zanzibar interns to purchase and obtain this in-country (at the airport, on arrival in Zanzibar). Interns receive details in advance, which outline instructions for this process (depending on your specific internship details), along with anticipated costs. Some interns are additionally required to purchase a Work Permit (US$400) in-country. Please note that the requirements and costs for such visas and/or permits are outside the control of Intern Abroad HQ and are subject to change without notice.

If you're using your Segal Education Award
Award funds have to go to a Title IV school, so your placement needs to carry academic credit. That required academic credit and enrollment fee starts at $999 and is on top of the program fees above. We'll walk you through it.
