Where's My Award? Find Your Segal Award Balance and Expiry

Step 1: Sign in to My AmeriCorps

Go to my.americorps.gov and sign in with the username you created during service. If you cannot remember it, use the forgot username or password links. They still work years later, and they send to the email address on your original application.

If that email address is long gone, call the National Service Hotline at 1-800-942-2677 and ask them to reset your account. Have your full name, date of birth, and the years and program you served with ready.

Step 2: Open My Education Award

From the left-hand menu, choose My Education Award. This is the page that matters. It lists every award you have earned and what has happened to it.

• Award amount: the full value of the award you earned
• Amount used: anything already paid to a school or applied to a qualified student loan
• Balance available: what you actually have to spend right now
• Expiration date: the last day you can use it

Step 3: Check your expiry date carefully

Your award expires seven years after your term of service end date, not seven years after you signed up. If you served multiple terms, each award has its own expiry, and you can hold up to the value of two full-time awards.

If your expiry is inside the next 12 months, that changes your planning. Programs need lead time, and the school has to disburse the funds before the expiry date, not just enroll you before it.

Step 4: Write down three numbers

Before you talk to anyone about a program, capture these three things. Every conversation about going abroad starts here, and having them ready saves you weeks.

• Your available balance, to the dollar
• Your expiry date, month and year
• Whether you have used any of it already, and for what

What if the balance looks wrong?

It happens. Awards get held up when a term of service was not formally closed out, or when a school reported a payment late. The portal reflects what AmeriCorps has on record, so if something is off, the National Service Hotline is the only place that can correct it.

One thing to know: the portal shows nothing about international programs, because your award is never paid to a program abroad. It is paid to an accredited U.S. school that partners with the international provider. Your balance is the same either way.

Then what?

Once you know your balance and expiry, you can see what is realistic. Roughly $2,000 covers a short-term placement, and a full-time award can fund anywhere from one week to six months abroad.
