Resources for AmeriCorps Alums: What to Do After Your Service Year
Your term of service ended, but a lot of what you earned did not. This is a short list of the things AmeriCorps alums most often wish someone had told them about sooner.

Check your Education Award first
Sign in at my.americorps.gov and open My Education Award. You will see your award amount, what you have used, your remaining balance, and your expiration date. If you cannot get in, call the National Service Hotline at 1-800-942-2677.
Awards expire seven years after your term ends, and unused funds are forfeited, so this is the one thing worth doing today.
Stay connected with other alums
Alumni networks, state service commissions, and the programs you served with are all good places to find events, job leads, and people who understand what a service year actually involved. Many state commissions share alumni news and opportunities with their networks.
Put your service skills on paper
Write what you did in outcome language: what you built, who you built it with, and what changed. That version helps in interviews, graduate applications, and career changes far more than a list of duties.
Use your award to go abroad
Many alums do not realize their Segal Education Award can fund an international volunteer placement or internship. The award goes to an accredited U.S. school that partners with the provider, and you enroll for at least one academic credit. No degree program required.
Read real alumni stories, browse placements by type and destination, or try the Pathfinder to get matched with specific programs.
